Dubai to open more than 700 bus shelters across city

Dubais Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has undertaken a project to build 762 bus shelters strategically located throughout the emirate. The comprehensive plan sets a goal of completing all the shelters by 2025 with RTA considering the trial use of printing technology, for some of them.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA emphasized that this endeavor reflects the authoritys dedication to improving public transportation services and enhancing customer satisfaction. The design of the shelters places importance on accessibility for individuals with disabilities, including wheelchair accessible areas in line with Dubai Code regulations.

As part of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoums “My Community… A Place for Everyone” Initiative this project aims to create an welcoming city for individuals with disabilities. Al Tayer highlighted these shelters as a stride towards promoting mobility and encouraging usage of public transportation.

The bus shelters are divided into four tiers based on their usage;

  1. Main stop; Catering to over 750 passengers daily
  2. Secondary stop; Serving between 250 and 750 passengers daily
  3. Primary stop; Attending to, between 100 and 250 passengers daily

    The pick, up/drop off station is utilized by around 100 passengers on a basis. The main stops will have sections with air conditioning while all shelters will offer areas. Additionally they will have advertising spaces and information screens that display bus routes, schedules, pick up times and other passenger related information and services.

This initiative demonstrates the commitment of the RTA to consistently improve the public transportation infrastructure in Dubai. The authority is dedicated to promoting a efficient urban mobility system encouraging greater use of public transport and ensuring that transportation facilities are accessible to everyone, including individuals, with specific needs.
