Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed the comprehensive rehabilitation project of Al Fahidi Fort, one of Dubai’s most historic landmarks. The restoration initiative was launched under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to ensure the preservation of the emirate’s cultural and architectural heritage for future generations.
Al Fahidi Fort, originally constructed in 1787, stands as the oldest existing building in Dubai and has long served as a symbol of the city’s rich past. Over the decades, the fort has functioned as a defensive structure, royal residence, and later as a museum reflecting the transformation of Dubai from a traditional trading port into a global metropolis. The rehabilitation project aims to safeguard its historical integrity while upgrading facilities to meet modern conservation standards.
During her review, Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasised the importance of protecting national heritage sites as part of strengthening cultural identity. The project incorporates advanced restoration techniques, structural reinforcement, climate control systems, and improved visitor pathways, ensuring both preservation and enhanced public engagement. Special attention is being given to maintaining original materials and architectural features, aligning with international best practices in heritage conservation.
The initiative also supports Dubai’s broader cultural vision by integrating educational programmes, exhibitions, and digital storytelling elements that highlight the emirate’s history. By blending traditional restoration methods with innovative technology, the rehabilitation reflects a forward-looking approach to cultural sustainability.
The revitalisation of Al Fahidi Fort reinforces Dubai’s commitment to preserving its roots while continuing its rapid development. Through this project, leadership underscores the importance of safeguarding historical landmarks as living symbols of identity, continuity, and national pride. The rehabilitation ensures that residents and visitors alike can continue to experience and learn from one of the most significant heritage sites in the United Arab Emirates.
