In a bold step towards transforming road safety and traffic efficiency, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police have announced a major restriction on truck movement along Emirates Road during peak evening hours. Starting January 2025, trucks will be prohibited from using the section between Al Awir Street and Sharjah from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM—a move set to ease congestion, improve safety, and give Dubai’s commuters a smoother ride.
The decision comes after an in-depth study on road usage and traffic behavior during peak times. With rising vehicle volumes, Emirates Road has long been a vital yet heavily congested corridor, often bottlenecked by the sheer presence of heavy trucks. By restricting truck movement during these critical evening hours, the RTA aims to give private vehicles and commuters a much-needed break, ensuring faster travel times and fewer road incidents.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that the restriction aligns with Dubai’s long-term strategy to improve road capacity, manage traffic flows effectively, and enhance overall road safety. “This decision is part of our ongoing efforts to reduce traffic congestion during peak hours, allowing for better mobility and safer travel across the city,” he said.
Dubai Police echoed this sentiment, with Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei pointing out that the ban was implemented with safety as the top priority. Studies show that the mix of heavy trucks and smaller vehicles during peak hours has been a leading cause of traffic delays and accidents. By implementing this measure, authorities hope to minimize the risks and ensure smoother navigation for all road users.
This isn’t the first time trucks have been placed under restrictions in Dubai. Roads like Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Ittihad Street, and other major corridors already enforce truck bans during certain hours, successfully improving traffic flow. Emirates Road will now follow suit, proving Dubai’s dedication to progressive traffic management strategies.
For commuters, the move signals brighter evenings ahead—free from the grinding frustration of truck-laden traffic jams. With roads clearer and safer, Dubai is paving the way for a smarter, smoother, and more efficient urban travel experience. Come January 2025, truck drivers may face a detour, but for everyone else, the journey promises to be a breeze!
