In a spectacular showcase of strategy and speed, Grandmaster Kateryna Lagno proved why she’s a force to be reckoned with on the 64-square battlefield, taking the crown at the 7th Fatima bint Mubarak International Blitz Chess Tournament for Ladies in Abu Dhabi. With over 250 fierce competitors from around the globe, the event was a whirlwind of adrenaline-fueled matches, lightning-fast moves, and brilliant checkmates — and Lagno reigned supreme.
Hosted under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, and powered by the vision of Sheikha Fatima bint Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the tournament lit up the halls of the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy. Played in blitz style (just three minutes on the clock!), the nine-round tournament followed the Swiss system and drew a diverse and enthusiastic crowd, with players of all ages and backgrounds, including categories for youth and People of Determination.
But this event wasn’t just about trophies and titles. It was a full-powered celebration of women’s empowerment, inclusion, and youth development — perfectly aligned with the UAE’s “Year of Community” spirit. From colourful medals to Dh40,000 in prize money, the tournament spotlighted both global talent and homegrown heroes. Standout Emirati players were honoured, including Anoud Mohamed (Under 18), Rouda Alserkal (Under 16), and Hafsa Mohamed (Under 10), among others.
Beyond the board, the event embodied the UAE’s commitment to nurturing young talent, promoting gender equality in sport, and building bridges through mind games. For many young players, it was a chance to test their wits against the best, learn from elite competitors, and gain confidence on an international stage.
