UAE’s Online Shopping Population Reaches 6.5 Million in 2023, Reflecting Rapid Growth

In a significant transformation of consumer behavior, around two million individuals, constituting 20% of the UAE population, have transitioned to online shopping in recent years. This surge has propelled the online shopping population from 4.5 million in 2019 to an impressive 6.5 million in 2023. Experts assert that this exponential growth is reshaping the landscape of the UAE’s retail sector, which stood at a substantial $83.5 billion (AED 306.6 billion) in 2022.

According to Akshay Jayaprakasan, Associate Partner of Redseer, this shift towards online shopping is accelerating the expansion of the e-commerce industry in the UAE, heralding a new era of digital commerce. Speaking at the Internet Commerce Summit 2024, Jayaprakasan highlighted the unprecedented growth witnessed across various sectors. Notably, there has been an astounding 87% increase in online travel bookings, while the food technology sector has experienced a remarkable 46% surge. These statistics underscore the profound impact of digitization on consumer habits and preferences.

Furthermore, Jayaprakasan emphasized that approximately 70% of consumers in the UAE are receptive to experimenting with new brands, reflecting a dynamic and evolving market landscape. This openness to innovation presents a wealth of opportunities for both established players and emerging startups in the e-commerce space.

The rapid growth of online shopping in the UAE is attributed to several factors, including increased internet penetration, widespread smartphone usage, and the convenience offered by online platforms. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of online shopping as consumers prioritize safety and convenience.

As more consumers embrace the digital marketplace, retailers are adapting their strategies to cater to evolving consumer demands. From enhancing user experience and streamlining payment processes to leveraging data analytics for personalized marketing, businesses are leveraging technology to stay competitive in the digital age.

The surge in online shopping not only reflects changing consumer behavior but also underscores the resilience and adaptability of the UAE’s retail industry. With e-commerce poised for continued growth, stakeholders across the sector are poised to capitalize on the myriad opportunities presented by the digital revolution, shaping the future of retail in the UAE.
