Dubai has unveiled plans for a massive new addition to its public transport network with the launch of the Dubai Metro Gold Line, a $9 billion (AED 34 billion) infrastructure initiative that signals a major Dubai Metro expansion.
Announced on April 22, 2026, this ambitious move stands out as one of the most significant milestones in the emirate’s ongoing Dubai transport development.
The Gold Line will be a 42-kilometre fully underground corridor, making it the first large-scale Dubai underground metro route. Designed to meet future demand, the project highlights how Dubai continues to invest in advanced infrastructure to support its growing population and economy.
Plans reveal that the line will include 18 stations and connect around 15 key areas across the city. From older districts to fast-growing residential and business hubs, this Dubai transport project is set to improve connectivity across multiple zones, making daily travel easier and more efficient.
The proposed route is expected to link areas such as Al Ghubaiba, Business Bay, Meydan, and Jumeirah Golf Estates, places that are already seeing rapid urban development and rising commuter demand.
Authorities have set a target completion date of September 9, 2032, aligning the project with Dubai’s long-term infrastructure roadmap.
Once completed, the Gold Line will seamlessly integrate with the existing metro system, including the Red and Green lines, while also connecting with the upcoming Etihad Rail network.
This level of integration will significantly strengthen the city’s public transport network. It is expected to expand the overall metro coverage and reduce dependency on private vehicles, especially during peak hours.
The new line is projected to serve approximately 1.5 million residents, reflecting the scale and impact of this Dubai Metro expansion. It will also connect dozens of new and upcoming developments, ensuring better accessibility for both residents and businesses.
Estimates suggest that the line could handle up to 465,000 passengers daily by 2040, easing congestion on major roads and supporting a shift toward more sustainable travel options.

By focusing on a fully Dubai underground metro, planners aim to reduce surface disruption while improving travel speed and efficiency. Advanced tunnelling technology will allow the metro to operate beneath busy urban areas without affecting existing infrastructure, making it a smart solution for a densely built city.
This Dubai transport project plays a key role in the emirate’s long-term urban vision, particularly the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. The plan focuses on creating a more connected, people-friendly city with efficient mobility options.
Officials have emphasized that such large-scale Dubai transport development is essential to support economic growth, attract global investment, and maintain Dubai’s position as a leading international hub.
Since its launch in 2009, the Dubai Metro has transformed how people move around the city. The addition of the Gold Line will take this further by expanding reach, increasing capacity, and improving overall accessibility.
This Dubai Metro expansion is not just about adding another line, it reflects a broader vision of building a smarter, more sustainable transport system.
With construction expected to begin soon, the Gold Line is set to redefine urban mobility and play a crucial role in shaping Dubai’s future.
